The village
Orcières is located in the upper Champsaur valley, on the banks of the Drac Noir. The village lies between 1170 m and 3117 m (Grand Pinier) and comprises 22 hamlets. The village of Orcières (chef lieu) is situated at just over 1400 m altitude. The Orcières Merlette 1850 ski resort is located in Merlette, around 6 kilometres away at an altitude of 1850 m. The commune also includes the small resort of Serre-Eyraud, situated on the ubac at an altitude of 1450 m, and the village of Prapic at the end of the Drac Noir valley, at an altitude of 1550 m.
Half of Orcières lies in the central zone of the Ecrins National Park.
It also boasts a number of lakes, including Lac des Estaris, Lac des Pisses, Lac Jumeaux and Lac Long.
