Ecrins national park

Half of the commune (a borough) of Orcieres is inside the central zone of the Ecrins national park so you can explore its winter wildernesses from Orcieres. It's the largest protected natural space in France (100,000 ha), perfect territory for snowshoeing or ski touring...

At the beginning of summer the mountain sides are lit up by rhodedendrons, orange lilies, martagon lilies... At sun rise, the light is exceptional and the perfect time of day for surprise meetings with chamois, deer, foxes... The distinct sound of the marmottes whistle can be heard everywhere. Above 3000m, glaciers dominate this dramatic rocky universe, with vast mountain pastures, larch forests mirroring the seasons... that you will never get bored, follow one of the numerous sign posted paths or walk with a mountain leader, taking care to respect the countryside of course !

Discover the magical, secret paradise hidden under it's winter coat. The Ecrins National Park, has a special and unique lure in these cold months. The snowy white landscape dominates, but also reveals the traces and tracks of the animals who make their homes here. And the encapsulating silence just adds to the mystery and wildness of this high mountain environment.

A natural area to discover with respect

This magnificent space is crying out to be explored... but with caution and respect. The mountains in winter are dangerous and the risk of avalanche is not to be underestimated. It is strongly recommended to only venture into the park with a professional. A respect is also due to the animals who survive the harsh winters in this environment and need their own space and calm. So watch and take pictures but don't get too close.

Every week from Orcieres : guided and themed snowshoe walks "chamois spotting", "history and heritage", "moonlit",  surveys of the snow conditions and wildlife with the park wardens ... and guided ski tours accessible to all !
